To answer your question:

1. Press [Ctrl + ,] to open the Settings.
2. Search for statusbarerror.
3. Disable the option shown in the Image by unchecking "Show the linter message on the line".

This will prevent the linter message from showing on the whole line while keeping the red squiggly line for hover popups.
