Figured this out - I'd created the file improperly. To resolve I:

1. Deleted the current .gitignore file
2. Committed
3. Created it again via touch .gitignore
4. Pasted the contents in
5. Recommitted
6. Created my venv again, and lo and behold, the files were actually ignored this time
