I'm using Pixel 8a on version 15, you can actually make it work again.

Open Settings, search for 'permission', should see Permission Manager,

tap on Permission Manager > Files > tap on See more apps that can access all files >

Here you'll see your app and you can change permission here to 'Allow access to manage all files'.
