I had this same error and the problem turned out to be an outdated git install. I did not realize that an older git, installed by an older brew (macos), was higher in my os PATH than my latest git. Cleaned that up at the OS level (uninstalled old git; made sure latest 'brew install git; brew link git' was being used) and all was well.
