After digging into this further it seems this is an issue with iCloud integration in OSX.

Despite having created the images on my Mac and carefully categorised them into folders on my Mac they somehow are not actually "on" my Mac until I tap the download from iCloud icon beside their respective folders. Only then can the training resume again without this error :/
